It is well known that TMLA Art students create beautiful work throughout the year in their classes. Recently 12 TMLA AP Art students were selected to illustrate a Christmas book written by a TMLA faculty member. Read the NY Daily News article here. All proceeds from the book go to TMLA. Call TMLA and offer any donation to the school and we will send the book to you or you may come by and pick it up...but call first to make sure we still have copies available. S. Helen Clancey Honored

Sister Helen Clancy is remembered by TMLA Alumnae from the 1970s as the Chairperson of the English Department. She was recently honored by the Sisters of St. Joseph for her many ministries as detailed here.

Sister Helen Clancey entered the Sisters of St. Joseph in the Centenary Year of 1956. After graduating from Brentwood College, her first ministry was teaching at the junior high school level. During this time, she earned an MA in English from Manhattan College. Then at The Mary Louis Academy she served as English teacher, Department Chairperson and Dean. In 1977 she was assigned as Assistant Principal at Our Lady of Perpetual Help HS in Brooklyn.During this period, she also Chaired the committee that rewrote the Constitutions of the Sisters of St. Joseph. Following this, she became an adjunct professor at St. John’s University and, through Mercy College, taught at the New York State men’s correctional facilities. She also performed financial work at a Queens parish.

From 1986-1994, Sister Helen was elected to the Congregation’s Leadership team as a Councilor. During her second term, she was asked to become the Administrator of Maria Regina Convent which was home to ill and retired Sisters. Helen assumed this new responsibility with characteristic enthusiasm and energy. Using her administrative background, she immersed herself in mastering health care, earned her license and began the process of having Maria Regina become a licensed health care facility. During the years of disruption while the facility was renovated to meet with State Department requirements, Helen and her staff continued to provide quality care for the health needs of the Sisters.

By October 2001, the Maria Regina Residence was dedicated as a State Licensed Health Care Facility. Due to Helen’s dedication and leadership, Maria Regina is now a 5 Star facility for recuperants and long term residents. It clearly reflects the unique Certificate of Need issued by the State Department of Health which states that…"Maria Regina is primarily for Sisters of St. Joseph, Sisters and Brothers of other religious congregations, Priests and Lay Persons as there is room." After 20 years as Administrator, Sister Helen resigned in June 2011 because of health concerns. She will be honored for her work in October 2011 by a grateful Congregation.

Mrs. Rose Sangirardi
(April 4, 1927- May 21, 2011)

Whether you were enrolled in one of her Home & Career courses or not, if you were part of TMLA from 1980-1995, you couldn’t help but be touched by the presence of Mrs. Rose Sangirardi. Better known as “Aunt Rose,” Mrs. Sangirardi brought joy and laughter to all of us at TMLA. In addition to her position as Chairperson of the Home & Career Dept, Mrs. Sangirardi oversaw all the preparations and details for the annual Senior Prom. Along with her devoted husband, “Uncle Larry,” she also chaperoned many school trips and other school events. Mr & Mrs. Sangirardi retired to Oklahoma City in 1995 to be near their children. Thank you, Aunt Rose and may God bless and keep you.

Art Show at TMLA

The 1st Annual Art Show by TMLA students was held on May 13, 2011. Several hundred works created by current TMLA students adorned the walls and tables of the cafeteria. Guests toured the room taking in the beauty of the many wonderful works done in various mediums. Alumnae Art majors served as judges for the Art competition that was included in the event. A number of alumnae Art majors who returned for the event are pictured above. The entire event was under the direction of TMLA Art Dept Chairperson, Mrs. Jenny Limberg-Durkin, Class of '98, who was aided by Art instructor, Ms. Olivia Infante. TMLA's Annual reunion took place on April 16, 2011. More than 400 alumnae returned to TMLA for the day. The classes that net this year were those that ended in 1 and 6. The event began with the Mass for Palm Sunday celebrated in memory of our deceased alumnae. Dinner followed for all and many alumnae toured the school recalling many fond memories. The School of Education presented TMLA Principal Sister Kathleen McKinney with its annual Leaders in Education Awards Dinner (L.E.A.D.) in the D’Angelo Center Ballroom on the Queens campus. This annual event honors St. John’s University alumni who have distinguished themselves as professional educators or educational administrators. Sister Kathleen was introduced at the awards dinner by Dr. Mary Ellen Freeley, St. John's Professor and Chair of The Mary Louis Academy Board of Directors. St. Joseph Liturgy

This year's liturgy for St. Joseph's Day was celebrated March 21 in Immaculate Conception Church. The Feast of St. Joseph is March 19th. (In the photo at left, Ms. Angela Cacciola, long-time faculty member at TMLA, carries the statue of St. Joseph to be placed on the altar.) It is a very important and beloved day for TMLA and the Sisters of St. Joseph who sponsor TMLA and it sister CSJ schools. It is the Congregation's Patronal Feast Day. Each year the TMLA community gathers together to celebrate our patron, to thank God for his many blessings, and to ask St. Joseph for his continued care. At the liturgy the Sisters of St. Joseph renewed their vows, the lay faculty renewed their commitment to education and the students stated their commitment to excellence and service. Spirit Night 2011

The 70th Spirit Night event took place on March 18, 2011 at Queens College. The theme for this year was board games. The Queens College gymnasium was filled with students, parents, and teachers all cheering, dancing, stepping and more. The first Spirit Day/Night events began in 1940. For many years it was known as Sports Night, but the themes and activities were the same.

Mr. Joseph Lewinger, TMLA Athletic Director & Social Studies teacher and Mr. Kevin O'Hagan, TMLA Assistant Athletic Director and Social Studies teacher, recently took part in a St. Baldrick event in support of Mr. Lewinger's daughter, Madison. The Lewinger team was the Brave & Strong. At a St. Baldrick’s event, young and old, male and female, sit side by side, and face the clippers as part of the worldwide effort of Shaving the Way to Conquer Kids’ Cancer.

Alumna daughter awarded full scholarship

Monica Arundel, daughter of Christine Zender Arundel '91 and husband, Steven, was awarded a full scholarship to TMLA as a member of the Class of 2015. Monica received the full scholarship based upon her superior scores on the TACHS Exam (formerly known as the Co-Op Exam) and on the TMLA Scholarship Exam given each December. The Zenders are happy and proud to continue the tradition of Education for Excellence through The Mary Louis Academy. Monica's favorite subjects are Math and Science.

TMLA mourns the sudden loss of Sister Margaret Brosile, CSJ, formerly known in religious life as Sister St. Benedict. Sister Margaret had taken ill on October 20 and underwent heart bypass surgery. She passed to the arms of Jesus on October 26th, 2010, in the 62nd year of religious life.

Sister Margaret had been a member of TMLA since 1963. She is remembered as the heart and soul of TMLA's Music Dept. For more than three decades she led the Glee Club and Orchestra. Her Christmas and Spring concerts remain unrivaled, as well as her annual St. Cecilia Day assembly. God bless you and keep you, Sister Margaret, and thank you from all in your TMLA family.

Daily News honors S. James Patrice CSJ

One of TMLA's most beloved and respected faculty members, Sister James Patrice Veale CSJ is celebrating her Diamond Anniversary - 75 years as a Sister of St. Joseph this November at a special jubilee celebration at the Brentwood Motherhouse. Homecoming photos in next issue of MARIEL-After

Many were moved to tears as nearly 1,000 alumnae, friends, faculty and supporters returned home to The Mary Louis Academy on October 2, 2010 for our 75th Anniversary Homecoming event. Guests entered through the main doors on Wexford Terrace, then climbed the staircase to the main foyer where they were greeted by Principal, Sister Kathleen McKinney, and Assistant Principals, Sister Filippa Luciano and Mrs. Ann Cordes, both alumnae.

Guests registered by class year then toured the school. Special set ups included A Walk through Time at TMLA which featured videos, photos and memorabilia from each decade. Special events were also held by the school robotics team, in the art studio, and in the gymnasium. The library held trivia contests and yearbook visuals. TMLA items were sold in the cafeteria, the Glee Club and Orchestra held a special performance of music through the decades and graduates recorded their own memories of TMLA. Present-day students, dressed in uniforms from all the decades, acted as tour guides. The day concluded with a Liturgy for deceased alumnae which concluded with a rousing rendition of the school song, CRUSADERS.

New Biology Lab Progressing

Monica Reddy Wood '72 conducts workshop in Math Education at TMLA

Monica Reddy Wood '72 (standing at right in photo)conducted a week-long workshop for Math teachers from the Catholic elementary schools in Queens. Twenty-one 8th grade teachers attended the donated workshop from 9-3 at TMLA during the second week of July. Monica, a long-time instructor of Math, is currently completing her PhD in Math at Columbia University. The workshop was so effective that several of the participants changed their vacation plans in order to continue working with Monica and the other teachers. Monica was assisted in the workshop by Mrs. Celeste Maloney, (standing at left in photo) Chairperson of TMLA Dept. of Math. All at TMLA offer Monica our gratitude for offering her time and expertise.

Bob Sheppard, Former TMLA Speech & Debate Director

He may be remembered best as the "Voice of the Yankees," but well before Bob Sheppard took a 50+ year spot in the Bronx, he was the Speech and Debate director for TMLA. During the late 1940s and early 1950s, Mr. Sheppard directed many TMLA girls to city, state and national Speech Tournament wins. Mr. Sheppard was also a strong supporter of the Sisters of St. Joseph and was an Associate of the Congregation. Our prayers and thoughts are with the family. Read more here.

Ever wonder what goes on at TMLA during the summer months when most faculty and students are enjoying their free time? Summer is when major housekeeping and building maintenance are done. Among many other projects being done this summer to improve our beautiful school is a repointing of the brick and roof as seen here.

The original biology lab, built in 1956, was gutted this week in order to make room for a new, cutting-edge Living Environment Laboratory to be ready for September. The old bio lab was built as part of the new wing and was designed more for lecture, rather than hands-on learning. A depiction of the new bio lab is here. S.Angela Mullen, CSJ 1916-2010

The Mary Louis Academy mourns the loss of Sister Angela Mullen, CSJ, Principal of TMLA from 1971-1977. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday June 21, at 11:30 am in Maria Regina Chapel, Brentwood, NY. S. Angela Mullen directed TMLA through one of the most change-filled times in Education. Sister Angela oversaw the use of modular scheduling, weighted GPA's, curriculum advances, the expansion of resource centers, the 40th Anniversary, uniform changes, and more. Prior to becoming an administrator, Sister Angela taught Biology, including at St. Anthony's Diocesan High School in Huntington. After leaving TMLA, Sister Angela worked in the Diocese of Rockville Centre Chancery Office. A bit of trivia, Sister Angela was also an honorary Boy Scout! The traditional Graduation Mass was held in honor of the Class of 2010 on Thursday June 3, 2010. The Graduation Mass has been celebrated for every graduating class of TMLA since 1940. Graduates, faculty, family and friends gathered in Immaculate Conception Church for Mass and the distribution of tassels and yellow roses. As always, grads wore their gowns, but not their caps for the Graduation Mass.

Remembering S. Mary Helenita CSJ TMLA Librarian since 1971 Entered Eternal Life April 16, 2010.

Sister Mary Helenita White, CSJ

Sister Helenita was born in Brooklyn, New York and attended elementary school in Nativity Parish. On graduating from Nativity School , she attended Bishop McDonnell Memorial High School and then entered the Sisters of St. Joseph on February 2, 1948.

She taught primary grades at St. Mary Star of the Sea School in Far Rockaway, Xaverian School in Brooklyn and Immaculate Conception School in Jamaica, Queens. During this time, she earned a BA in Latin from St. John's University and then went on to teach Latin at St. Angela Hall Academy.

Helen continued her studies at St. John's in Library Science and left St. Angela Hall to become a librarian at The Mary Louis Academy. She gave most of her ministerial life to this until she retired to Mary Louis Convent in 2005. S. Helenita served at TMLA from 1971 until 2005.

Helen enjoyed shopping and cooking and put time into providing for the needs of the Sisters in the convent. We thank her for her energy and dedication and for living her vocation faithfully for 63 years.

New Biology Lab is Coming

TMLA has just announced exciting news. Major construction work will commence this summer on a brand new,state-of-the art biology lab at TMLA. Click here to see the plan.
The Hyde & Watson Foundation has awarded a $25,000 challenge grant toward the renovation of the biology lab. The condition of the grant is that we raise an additional $25,000 from our alumnae and from parents of current students.
The total cost of the renovation of the biology lab is approximately $75,000. This challenge grant, along with our match, and the money we have already raised, will bring us very close to the total amount needed for the renovation.
Our biology lab is in its original design from 1957. It was built at a time when lecture was the accepted method of teaching. Today, a state-of-the-art biology lab is imperative as we prepare young women to attend the best colleges and encourage those who are interested to pursue a career in the field of science.
Every student at TMLA is required to study Biology/Living Environment for one year. Advanced Placement Biology enjoys a high enrollment every year as do elective upper classes in Anatomy and Physiology. Forensic Science was added to the curriculum this year.
Proposed classes include AP Environmental Science, Sports Physiology, and Biomechanics. A new Biology Lab would also house long-awaited science research projects such as the Intel Competition and Siemens Competition, formerly known as The Westinghouse Competition.
Please help us to match this grant! A gift of any size is welcome. As soon as we can demonstrate to The Hyde and Watson Foundation that we have raised $25,000 from alumnae and parents they will send us a check for $25,000.

A Blessed Holy Week & Joyous Easter to all in our TMLA Alumnae Family. Easter 2010 at TMLA included Reconciliation Day, and a Holy Week prayer service centered around the Stations of the Cross. For many years Holy Week featured a retreat. In these photos are pictured an Easter Hat Sale circa 1967-68, the proceeds of which went to aid the Little Sisters of the Poor Home for the Aged in Bushwick (no longer in operation) and preparation for the Spring Concert with Sister Margaret Clare.

2010 Alumnae Reunion

TMLA's annual reunion event on March 27 saw nearly 500 alumnae gather at the school for Mass at 3PM, followed by dinner. Members of the graduating classes ending in '0 or '5 reconnected with each other, mingled with faculty old and new, toured the school and spoke with current students.

TMLA continues its strong second language study programs

More than 150 TMLA students were recognized for their outstanding performance in the study of a second language at the March 25th induction of the LOTE Honor Society. Top students in Spanish, French, Italian and Latin were announced as well as awards for Perfect Regents Score, Perfect AP Score, and awards for the National Spanish Exam and the National Latin Exam. The theme of the 2010 Language Other than English Dept Honor Society Induction was "TMLA Women of Peace." Enjoy a video celebrating our second language classes and the TMLA Woman.

St. Joseph's Day Liturgy

St. Joseph is the patron of TMLA's Sisters of St. Joseph, Brentwood, NY. Each year on March 19th, the feast day of St. Joseph, TMLA celebrates with an all-school liturgy. Reverend Bill Sweeney officiated at the Mass in Immaculate Conception. During the liturgy the Sisters of St. Joseph renew their vows, while the lay faculty and student body declare their commitment to TMLA.
It is during the St. Joseph Day celebration that the TMLA Peacemaker Awards are given to selected faculty and students. This year four students and faculty members, Ms. Kathryn Bruen and Sister Linda Pero CSJ received the award.

TMLA Robotics Wins US FIrst NYC Regional Competition

The Mary Louis Academy Robotics Team competed for the first time in the US First National Robotics Competition. TMLA was entered in the NYC Regional Competition held on March 13 at the Javits Centre in Manhattan.
TMLA Robotics was named one of the four winning high schools in the NYC Regional Competiition. The team will be going on to the national competition in Atlanta on April 15th.
U.S. First Robotics is one of the most elite academic competitions held each year throughout the country. TMLA expresses much gratitude to Ms. Kathy Rutherford, a member of TMLA Class of ‘78, who provided partial funding for the team and who helped to organize contributions from several other alumnae. We would also like to thank Mr. Vinod Lala, our team director who has worked everyday for hours organizing and preparing the team and to Mr. Greg Ronan, father of Vanessa Ronan, who helped in so many ways to empower the team to create our winning robot.

Art Studio Dedicated to Liz White Regan '77

The Mary Louis Art Studio was dedicated on March 6, 2010 to Elizabeth White Regan, a member of the Class of 1977. Nearly 100 of Lizzie's friends and relatives, including many TMLA grads, were on hand for the event which began with a liturgy in the Mary Louis chapel. Reverend Vin Dicola SJ presided at the liturgy, during which Lizzie's children and siblings offered readings and reflections. At the close of the liturgy, TMLA principal, S. Kathleen McKinney(who had also taught Lizzie while she was a student at the Academy) presented Mrs. White with a special bouquet of blue hydrangeas and yellow tulips, symbolic of the school's colors of blue & gold, for her 80th birthday. The group then headed over to the Art Studio to officially dedicate the building to Lizzie's memory. A painting that Lizzie did was presented by the White Family to TMLA for its archives. Snow Day Memories

TMLA had a rare snow holiday this past week bringing back past snowy memories including January 1996 when we had only 8 days of school because of so much snow and December of 1995 when all the Christmas festivities were canceled due to storms. And, of course, who can forget the blizzards of 1947 and 1969 - the infamous Lindsay Blizzard - when streets remained unplowed for days in Queens. Take a look at the snow scenes taken by S. The Mary Louis Academy Alumnae Association awards tuition scholarships annually to students who are daughters, granddaughters or sisters of Mary Louis alumnae, and who have the highest grade point average among the applicants. The scholarship is funded by a 200 Club raffle, and is named in memory of S. Nora Hillery, CSJ, (Sister Joseph Patrice). Sister Nora was a member of TMLA’s first graduating class of 1940, a teacher at TMLA and former Alumnae Association moderator. She spent many years in Puerto Rico where she served as Head of the Library at the Pontifical Catholic University. She passed away in 1998. Above, S. TMLA remembers Sister Dorothy Geiger CSJ (formerly Sister M. Walter) who entered Eternal Life on January 5, 2010. She was in her 61st year of Religious Life. Sister Dorothy was a member of the English Dept at TMLA during the 1970s and 1980s. She was also the dedicated moderator of CRUSADER yearbook. Sister Dorothy is seen in this photo between S. Mary Helenita CSJ (who lives in the Brentwood Motherhouse) and two student members of the Library Club.

Schmidt's Candies - Margie Schmidt Class of 1977 featured on WABC-TV

If you grew up in Woodhaven, Queens or the surrounding area, surely you must have visited Schmidt's Candies on Jamaica Avenue, right off Woodhaven Blvd. near 94th Street. Proprietress Margie Schmidt, Class of 1977, has continued the family business started by her grandfather in 1925 into a 3rd and 4th generation. The shop was featured by ABC-TV as part of their New York Holiday Show. The good news is that now you don't need to live in Woodhaven or even in Queens to enjoy Schmidt's marvelous candy confections. You can visit the store and order online very easily. Don't expect any store-bought type chocolates, though. These are all hand-made from original recipes right in Schmidt's own kitchen by Margie herself. The ribbon candy is true old-fashioned hand-pulled ribbon candy, not the mass-produced box candy canes. Every type of candy is a winner and, yes, Margie has sugar-free. Her molds are terrific!. Once you taste these chocolates, you will never go back to assembly line candy!

Claudia DeMonte, Class of 1965, topic of new book

Claudia DeMonte is an artist, a teacher, a curator, and a collector. She has given each of these simultaneous careers her unfailing attention throughout her adult life. To say she is accomplished in each field is an understatement; in fact, she has excelled in all and has managed to break new ground in each. She's a pioneer, a feminist, an acute observer, and an advocate for the overlooked.

This monograph of her career (available online as well as in all bookstores) as an artist begins with her self-image works of the 1970s--photo essays, installations, T-shirts--followed by her painted pulp paper sculptures, works in clay, paintings, her Female Fetish series (pewter Milagros nailed onto wooden objects), fabric pieces and installations, drawings, and bronzes. The array of media she uses is not only eclectic, it's highly unusual. But DeMonte has never hesitated to jump in and use whatever feels right.

This book contains approximately 120 reproductions, with a foreword by Agnes Gund, president emerita of the Museum of Modern Art, and an essay by Eleanor Heartney, contributing editor to Art in America. It is the first retrospective of Claudia DeMonte's work, a long overdue review of one of America's most intriguing contemporary artists.
